3/While COI discloses the *roles* of the authors in the company, does not disclose any actual financial interest/COI in the specific technology (genetic models) described in the paper.

Like, who owns it -- Michigan State? The company? -- and is it being used commercially.
4/ This company in the news because its genetic prediction tests for embryos, LifeView, has reached the market.

Veritas Genetics which tried to make a business offering inexpensive whole genome sequencing to consumers, is going out of business in the U.S., looks like.

Had problems including a data breach and just a lack of demand from people to know their genes.
"Veritas in July said that it had sequenced 5,000 genomes, with a goal of sequencing more than 150,000 in 2021. The company has raised more than $50 million in venture funding, according to Crunchbase."

In 2017 we reported Veritas going to offer whole genome sequencing for Chinese kids, but planned offerings to that market -- predictions about baldness, musical talent -- were condemned by expert opinion here.

Scientists debate. Should He Jiankui's draft manuscripts be released in full?

In favor: Let everyone see it, understand it, learn more about it.

Against: Unethical human subjects research, must be repressed.
Howard Bauchner, the editor of JAMA, which reviewed but rejected the manuscript, told me this was the "central quandry."

* This thread is NOT medical advice! Ask your health providers about medical concerns! Also, I’m referring to folks 18+ since personally I don’t think parents/guardians should order DTC testing on minors. That could be a whole thread on its own, so I’m leaving kids out of this.
1) I don’t think telling people not to do things is the answer. I believe people should have access to the info they want about their health & DNA (Though informed choices are key! And I wish there was better access for more people so that DTC didn’t seem like the only option)

While I cannot attest to the veracity of these reports, I think there are misconceptions here about climate-linked humanitarian crises. One of the effects of climate change is the increased frequency of extreme events such as droughts and floods. #Thread 1/10
So, just because there have been severe floods in certain parts of the country *does not* negate the occurrence of droughts in other parts. I think the term "localized" needs to be emphasized in this context because the impact of extreme weather events is seldom uniform. 2/10
Here is a very basic background of the rainy season over Somalia. During the Gu, the Somali Jet plays a key role in transporting moist air from an area of high pressure around south of Madagascar, past the Horn of Africa to India. The Jet dumps its moisture along the way. 3/10

Parmi les espèces les plus en danger, on compte les amphibiens. Grenouilles, crapauds et autres joyeusetés subissent depuis les années 1980 une déclin plus que préoccupant de leur population.
En 2004 une 1ere évaluation révélait que 32% des espèces étaient globalement menacées, au moins 43% connaissaient une forme de diminution de la population et qu'entre 9 et 122 espèces avaient disparu depuis 1980. (science.sciencemag.org/content/306/57…)
