Question: how can we repair the mess that is political communications? Because I see a problem here (thread)
The problem is multifaceted: there’s a complex negotiation that involves by necessity saying no to one proposal. You can do that in any number of ways: broadly, aggressively, on a small point, with/without counterproposal
Now the perception of how you rejected depends on what was said and how that message was received. Which leads to problems.
1) what was said? A large entity (EU, UK etc.) has thousands of people playing some role. You want to find someone saying something unfortunate? You’ll find them
2) how was it received? There’s the normal psychology (if you think your proposal was brilliant, you might find even constructive criticism on a minor detail unacceptable)
And then there’s how it is spun. I have seen the same message from Barnier reported as outrageous obstructionism by the EU and a breakthrough.
In that environment: how can we reach productive outcomes?
