This made me SO angry: Blind Ghanaian student was dragged out of an Oxford Union debate BY HIS ANKLES because they wrongly thought he wasn’t allowed to be there. The union THEN disciplines HIM for - I shit ye not - “violent hand gestures” and suspended him for two terms. 1/
Oxford Union eventually backtrack and “unreservedly apologise” (not for their behaviour, but for “distress caused - which seems to me pretty fucking reservéd). I wonder why they thought this African man didn’t belong in the Oxford Union. 🤔 IT’S A MYSTERY WORTHY OF POIROT. 2/
The President of the Union, whose decision was to discipline the disabled student, a PPE oik named Brendan McGrath - no doubt “a very good sort of chap” being groomed for politics - has not resigned or apologised or even issued any sort of statement acknowledging he fucked up. 3/

Raising trade barriers between us and our closest market is a backward step. GEOGRAPHY MATTERS. The fact we can overcome barriers like tariffs or distance and still do business, doesn’t mean it isn’t daft to ACTUALLY put up barriers ourselves (in exchange for what, is unclear).
It’s like switching off the light and saying “it’s fine, we can still read using candelabras; it’ll be difficult and more expensive, but we can do it”.

Sure we can. BUT WHY WOULD WE CHOOSE TO?

Switch on the fucking light, vote Remain and stop this utter nonsense.
Also, I’m a quite pissed. But even pissed I make more sense than these nincompoops do sober.

The present security challenges in Northern Nigeria do not exist by accident or by chance.
They are a consequence of decades of neglect and reluctance to invest in our people, especially the youth.
The opportunity to exploit ethnicity, religion and social conservatism has presented itself numerous times to the Northern political elite, and remains a major factor in maintaining the status-quo.

Those on top remain on top, and those below continue to struggle.
Why should they invest massively in education?
Why should they reform the Almajiri scholarship system?
Why should they do ANYTHING that has no bearing on the next election???

24 years ago today the Northridge #earthquake (actually 2 near simultaneous 6.9 quakes) caused death & severe damage across Southern California. I lived in Burbank at the time and clearly recall feeling powerless against the forces of nature. #northridge
There's little warning for a quake (just enough to duck under a desk if you have a warning system like they do in Japan) and the damage is done almost all at once. So we establish tougher building codes, do drills, and train first responders.
Earthquakes like the Northridge quake are the result of pressure building up in fault lines that run all through Southern California and pretty much every where else in the world. (Even here in Florida, there's a huge fault just off the coast.)
