I learned something important from Fareed Zakaria's CNN special on impeachment tonight: Dick Cheney's coordinated campaign to lie America into a bloody war in the 2000s was just an oopsie, and the impeachment effort it bred morally the equivalent of the racist Tea Party movement
/ The revisionist history I just watched on CNN—regarding a time I lived through—convinces me as much as anything else in 2019 that nothing really matters, as if you just wait a few years reporting will sagely tell you that a determined campaign to lie to America was just a goof
/ It really felt like "bothsidesism" in service of a preset narrative, that "both sides" have called for impeachment over nonsense; the special thus built its ethos atop the rubble of lived history, which truthfully as an avid CNN watcher and Zakaria fan I found pretty harrowing
/ I *agree* with Fareed: impeachment should only be a last resort; but the fact is, historians who've looked at the march to war in the 2000s have *not* concluded that the WMD lie was a mere oopsie, but rather a coordinated lie that *Cheney* could easily have been impeached over
/ That said, I *disagree* with Fareed's reading of the Mueller Report, which was *not* "ambiguous" on Obstruction of Justice; as for collusion, I *agree* we needed/need an FBI counterintelligence report to conclusively determine if Trump is a national security risk over *Russia*
/ Moreover, the Mueller Report spawned many *other* probes of Trump's activities that could, upon their return, easily lead to separate Articles of Impeachment; and some issues, like bribery over Trump's '15 real estate deal with the Kremlin, were inexplicably dropped altogether
/ Somehow, Fareed concluded that the worst thing Trump has ever done is his obstruction of Congress during the Ukraine scandal, even as the equally meticulously documented obstruction of justice Trump engaged in during the Mueller Investigation is seen by Zakaria as "ambiguous"
