In World War 2, necessity was the mother of invention. The need for larger anti-tank weapons led the German Wehrmacht to use the 88 mm anti-aircraft gun to defeat Allied tanks. It was terrifyingly effective in both roles.
Today, modern IFVs carry 30-40 mm cannons to defeat enemy AFVs and ground targets; but imagine if the same cannons could used in the air defence role. To be effective they would need increased elevation and radar tracking systems.
Actually such systems already exist. Dedicated anti-aircraft cannons, like the 35 mm Oerlikon Revolver Mk 3, are equally effective in a ground role. All they need is the right mix of ammunition types and dual-mode fire control systems.
If Strike brigade infantry battalions were supported by a reconnaissance regiment equipped with a multi-role cannon able to fire HE against ground targets, APFSDS against AFVs and HEAB against drones and fast jets, they would be much more potent formations.
If the cost of fitting radar to every vehicle was prohibitive, then regular reconnaissance vehicles could be connected to a radar equipped vehicle with something like the SAAB Giraffe 4a or AMB. In any event, using ground-based radar systems is likely to become more important.
