I was supposed to interview a managing partner at @McKinsey about women in the workplace. Critical topic. But now – minutes before we were supposed to walk on stage - I’m pulling out.

Why? Because it’s not OK to talk out of both sides of your mouth. And, it’s personal.

THREAD:
@McKinsey I’m a business journalist. My dad’s life crumbled in a decade-long deportation case. I worked with more than 1,000 detainees – decent people, trying to support families.

Meanwhile McKinsey has been advising ICE on how to feed immigrants (like Dad) less and deport them faster.
@McKinsey @NYT and @Propublica: nytimes.com/2019/12/03/us/…

Managing partner Kevin Sneader covered up the firm’s role in architecting ICE’s mass deportation system. He misled his staff in an email in 2018:
@McKinsey @NYT @propublica FOIA and interviews reveal @McKinsey proposed cuts in spending on food and medical care for detainees. Post 9-11, I petitioned ICE to get food and medical care to detainees.

(I helped @NPR report on this young man, who died from medical neglect

@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR Legally, detention is a “civil” hold. It’s not supposed to be punitive. But it is. And McKinsey consultants proposed to make it more so.

I wonder if the firm includes human and civil rights experts. (I don’t really wonder about that.)
@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR The @McKinsey recs were so aggressive, ICE staffers pushed back. There were “heated meetings.”

Close your eyes and imagine: people committed to exiling the immigrant moms and dads of American children were telling the management consultants that THEY are going too far.
@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR ICE was very happy with @McKinsey services.

Btw, removing “aliens with a final order” often means throwing an immigrant on a plane before s/he can exercise due process rights in federal court.
@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR About tonight’s event: McKinsey interviewed more than a quarter million people and found that the biggest barrier for women at work isn’t getting into the c-suite. It is getting into any management position at all. “Broken rung” a bigger problem than “glass ceiling.” News to me.
@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR Also, I wanted to ask about @Facebook. COO Sheryl Sandberg’s Leanin.org was involved in the survey. So, while her philanthropic wing is talking the talk, her for-profit tech giant is, well, not really hiring women…

@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR @facebook @McKinsey staff (including my friends): Your boss should not have lied to you. The truth matters. So do families. If you’re unfamiliar w ICE, you can read my memoir. I cried nonstop writing it, making sense of how Dad got cast as a “criminal alien” and my life turned upside down.
@McKinsey @NYT @propublica @NPR @facebook @cwclub and @INFORUMsf: thank you for understanding.
