This @nytimes story about Nicholas Feliciano's attempted suicide includes a quote that people sometimes threaten suicide as a "manipulative gesture."

If you know anything about suicide, it is that every time someone threatens to kill themselves it should be taken seriously.
This is particularly so where people are incarcerated. People die by suicide in jails at a rate 3 times that of the general population (despite the fact that it is more difficult given the level of supervision).

And half of all jail suicides occur within a week of admission.
There's another statement that stands out in this paragraph about this particular case. "It is unclear what Mr. Feliciano's intentions might have been."

Given that Mr. Feliciano is now in a coma with no brain activity, I would say his intention was pretty clear.
Reading the comments under this article, it is clear people really don't understand how horrific jails are and how pervasive suicide is. That's part of what allowed these guards to stand around and watch as a child hanged himself.

But journalists, I thought would know better.
