@monaeltahawy Just to clarify, reading the comments, I was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up there. I moved to NYC as an adult and have lived here my entire adult life. My family live in Australia and I visit often.
@monaeltahawy I don't think there is less racism and misogyny in the US. I think the mainstream discourse around these topics is, for want of a better word, more sophisticated and there is generally more awareness of things like cultural appropriation.
@monaeltahawy I also think because the US is bigger, there is more space for dissent. There are amazing people on the left in Australia - Indigenous women doing incredible things for instance. The population is just so much smaller, they have to fight much harder for their voices to be heard.
