There are few things better than classic cartoons trashing Nazis. (THREAD)
A great scene of Bugs Bunny imitating Hitler from 1945's HERR MEETS HARE. The U.S. Marine Corps actually officially inducted Bugs into the force as a private, complete with dogtags. He was discharged at the end of the war as a Master Sergeant.
Donald Duck has a nightmare about being a Nazi in Disney's Oscar-winning classic DER FUEHRER'S FACE (1943). According to director Jack Kinney, "We heard that Hitler burned every copy he could find. We loved that."
Hitler goes ballistic at "Non-Aryan Duck" Daffy in the 1943 classic SCRAP-HAPPY DAFFY. Great transition from the horse's rear end to Hitler's head.
A really funny WWII Nazi reference in the 1943 Tom & Jerry cartoon THE LONESOME MOUSE. Usually deleted in TV prints.
Popeye gives the Nazis a spinach-fueled smackdown in the 1943 cartoon SPINACH FER BRITAIN. Popeye is doing the morse code for "victory" at the end there.
Cartoon genius Tex Avery gave Hitler such a thrashing in the 1942 masterpiece THE BLITZ WOLF that producer Fred Quimby apparently got cold feet and reminded Avery that they didn't know for sure who was going to win the war.
Porky Pig helped the war effort by tracking down Nazis, seen in CONFUSIONS OF A NUTZY SPY (1943). Here he blows one to kingdom come with a cartoon bomb.
In RUSSIAN RHAPSODY (1944), Bob Clampett caricatures the Looney Tunes artists as gremlins electrocuting Hitler. The anarchic little guys here are a clear influence on the 1984 classic GREMLINS by @joe_dante.
@joe_dante A beautifully-animated Disney self-parody in 1943's EDUCATION FOR DEATH, which casts Hitler as Prince Charming and Germany as a Disney Princess! Kind of a racy gag there at the end.
@joe_dante Forgotten cartoon stars Gandy Goose and Sourpuss from the Terrytoons studio blow up pig and monkey versions of Hitler and Mussolini in THE LAST ROUND-UP (1943). I love that jingoistic ending.
@joe_dante The Private Snafu cartoons were made specifically for the U.S. army. SPIES, which portrays Hitler as Satan, was written by Dr. Seuss... in rhyming dialogue, naturally.
@joe_dante This great Disney propaganda cartoon - STOP THAT TANK from 1942 - shows Hitler whining about "being oppressed" and has him in burp... in German.
@joe_dante A cartoon demonstration of how Nazis use fear and race hatred to gain support in Disney's 1943 cartoon REASON AND EMOTION. This film served as an inspiration on the Pixar movie INSIDE OUT.
@joe_dante The 1942 Looney Tune THE DUCKTATORS is a farmyard satire of how Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo rose to power, released three years before George Orwell's ANIMAL FARM. Listen for the line, "Here's one for Pearl Harbor!" (Warning: some '40s-era racial stereotyping.)
@joe_dante The first ever Hitler spoof on film (seven years before Charlie Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR and eight years before the US entered the war) is the 1933 Looney Tune BOSKO'S PICTURE SHOW, which portrays him as an axe-wielding maniac.
From PLANE DAFFY (1944) directed by the great Frank Tashlin.
@joe_dante Daffy Duck bashing Hitler on the head with a mallet is one of the greatest scenes in film history. (From 1943's DAFFY - THE COMMANDO.)
@joe_dante Thanks for the likes, all! Obligatory link to my cartoon MUSICAL MAN AND THE MAGIC KAZOO:
