Get this:

While parked at LAX over the last week, a RAT got into my brand new Subaru, chewed up the back seat, pissed/crapped on everything, and destroyed the electrical for:

-Anti-Lock Brakes
-Crash Prevention System
-Gas Gauge
-Power Steering
-Power Braking
-Cruise Control
I had to drive it home - it was 10pm and I have three kids.

I had to stop fast on Pacific Coast Highway and the brakes locked up, I slid out, and nearly caused a four-car pile-up.

Needless to say, I am not driving it for a while.
Update: confirm that they chew through that plastic vent under the bumper, just like with my last Subaru, and they chew through the ABS harness and the fuel tank harness.

Driving it last night was so dangerous, and I had no idea. I thought it was just an electrical glitch.

Before we criticize stores for being open on Thanksgiving, please consider this:

There have always been businesses open on Thanksgiving (some gas stations, grocery stores, corner shops, hospitals, etc).

Also, for some people, the opportunity to work for overtime pay is HUGE.
We should interrogate a system that puts ppl in the position of choosing between being with family and making necessary money - particularly WalMart where execs are SO wealthy and their employees are often below the poverty line.

But let's not remove agency from the employees.
Not all employees want to be with their families, not all employees are sad to be at work on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

As long as we keep that in mind and show respect for the workers while we interrogate the exploitive system, we should be good.

I'm sick and tired of people using Jim Jordan's likely enabling of child sexual abuse as a talking point against the Right.

Here's the thing: Men who commit sexual violence come from all walks of life, all ends of the political spectrum.
We should **ABSOLUTELY** hold Jim Jordan responsible for likely enabling sexual violence against students he was responsible for. An investigation should be brought, charges filed.
But these men deserve their stories to be heard and respected without being tied to any of our issues, any of our agenda.

Survivors aren't your pawn. Their pain is not just another talking point against the right.

Keep impeachment separate from calls for justice against Jordan.

This this this. Not just academia, all over the place.

There are certainly people working 80-100 hour weeks to survive. Respect to them. But that's not what's happening in academia or 1%er jobs. These are just bragging rights.
My husband works 70 hour+ weeks because it's the nature of his job (he works in television), but he doesn't think it's healthy, he doesn't brag on it, he's trying to change it for his entire company (because he knows it's awful), and he knows he couldn't do it without me at home.
And he knows he's missing out on life with this kind of schedule, and he is devastated by that.

This culture of overwork is horrible for us. When we brag about it, we feed into it. And it's not the job of the middle or working classes to solve the problem.

Over the last week, protesters in Baghdad have died with some absolutely gruesome injuries. Every doc we talked to said it's trauma like they've never seen.

Listen, there are videos out there of these horrific injuries at the moment of impact. Do yourself a favor and don't watch them - your sleep will thank you. The CT scans from hospital afterward are bad enough, as you can see.
Why such awful trauma? Less-lethal weapons can always kill when used incorrectly, and police should never fire grenades directly at people. But this is a new level of damage. Not only are Iraqi security forces firing at point blank range, they are using a heavier kind of grenade.

To revive my old hashtag, #TodaysRussianProverb, "Once you've grabbed the tug rope, don't say you ain't strong enough"... This is to say that I will indeed review tonight's Episode 5 of #ChernobylHBO with another dose of Soviet-era trivia and whatever else gets drudged up.
Let's start by saying that over the last week the state media and "patriotic" commentariat have finally gotten into gear with critical takes, calling it everything from a vicious Western attack on the memories of Soviet heroism to a mindless collection of fables and stereotypes..
The finale will probably only intensify this rhetoric, since here the Soviet bureaucracy and systemic failures really come into focus. I am not an expert on nuclear power, but I can offer my view on the "mindless stereotypes" angle. Once again, my area is authenticity of details.

Over the last week, protests have erupted across #Sudan, with NISS intelligence service stations being burnt and reports of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) defending protestors in some locations. This is a developing thread for remotely monitoring the situation, h/t @trevorsnapp.
In Atbara, for example, protesters have set fire to the headquarters of ruling the National Congress Party, led by President Omar al-Bashir. There's plenty of visual evidence of the unrest, such as this video. Geolocation: 17.694190, 34.001319 (google.com/maps/place/17%…).
