@SouthwestAir .@southwestair in all their DM conversations with me have ignored the fact that their flight attendant told my wife she was making passengers "uncomfortable" (which is false) by "reading" their faces (huh?). Uncomfortable, by politely asking for a swap which every family does?

Hey @SouthwestAir: not a good look for your flight attendant on SW5539 to DC last night to loudly tell a brown woman in a headscarf she'll be "escorted off the plane" for making people feel "uncomfortable" - because she wanted to sit with her husband & kids!

The flight attendant called ground staff onto the plane, complained about the Muslim woman - my wife! - to them, & escalated rather than de-escalated the situation - simply because my wife politely asked a guy if he'd give up his seat for our family (which he was fine with!).

Even her own @SouthwestAir colleague from the ground staff who came onboard to check things wondered why the flight attendant wouldn't shut up & let things go so we could take off.

"Why is she escalating this?" a passenger from across the aisle also asked aloud.

Why indeed.

When I pitched AMERICANIZASIAN, a Partner compared it to a female cartoonist's collection of political cartoons—many of which are anti-Trump—& described both of our books as "angry" & with "no story for people to relate to," implying her book was a mistake & mine would be too. 2/
The Partner—a white man—said my work should be "more positive" & implied that my AsAm experience would be more relatable if it was like PEN15, a show that reminds his half-Japanese wife of her childhood (the protagonist is half-white, half-Japanese—I'm neither, I'm Filipino). 3/

Since Monday I've reflected on what I’ve heard and witnessed over 37 years. With online results databases, it’s been straightforward to identify exact dates. My first match was in 1983. I never heard any direct racist abuse shouted at a specific player by any fan for a decade.2

I can personally tell you it happens with regular frequency.
When you're driving in a car, this type of bigotry can literally be life threatening, for the driver as well as anyone else on the road. You have to keep your cool because you don't want fear or panic to cause an accident.
When I was younger, I used to gleefully respond to "why don't you go back to your country" with "why don't you get back on the mayflower", which resulted in a string of profanity and reddened faces. What can I say, I grew up on MAD magazine's snappy answers to stupid questions.
