That post blames Intel, but it's not just them. NaCl forcibly crashed (and Google refused our trivial fix!!!), random drivers wouldn't work, you had to get a patched Windows installer for multiple releases of Windows (difficult in the days of CD installers), etc.
The Google Chromium team banning our CPUs is especially ironic in retrospect since they cited security concerns.

At the time, we were mostly shipping in-order CPUs, not vulnerable to Metldown/Spectre/etc. and of course Intel is the most vulnerable these.

BTW, if you want to try CPUID spoofing without virtualization and have a VIA processor, Agner Fog wrote this little utility:

Performance delta on benchmarks varies, here's an example of a ~50% gain (47%):

Am I the only person who thinks that the fact that so many people with track records fail FizzBuzz is more likely to be a a strike against FizzBuzz than an endorsement?

There's another HN hiring thread and ofc. it's full of people warning others about "fake" programmers.
One of the best engineers I've ever worked with has never passed a "real" interview. He gets so nervous when ordering fast food that he has to repeat his order in his head when he's in line, otherwise he'll freeze up when it's his turn to order.

Interviews are even worse for him
He's only changed jobs once in a 15 year career (when a bunch of his co-workers changed companies and were able to hire him w/o a "real" interview) and has failed every other interview. He got his first job after an internship with no "real" interview.

@hyperpape @jesterreborn I don't disagree with this approach in principle, but for this to work, I think you need something like you get in chess tactics puzzle books: a ton of problems that let you hone your intuition.

It seems difficult for a talk to provide this.
@hyperpape @jesterreborn IMO, another difference is that we have a decent idea of what works in chess and basically no idea about what works in programming.

(Again IMO,) this means a justification of the idea is required in a way that's not true in chess and this is almost never provided in talks.

An example would be, types are pointless because you end up with function signatures like (float, float, float, ...) with 17 floats, which isn't helpful (actual example from a RH talk).

@hillelogram Took me a while to get to it, but I re-watched this talk as a result of your tweet and the most striking thing to me is how it's a series of reasonable sounding but totally unsupported and often ill-defined and/or unfalsifiable claims.
@hillelogram Like, "we can only hope to make reliable those things we can understand". Sounds reasonable, how can you argue with that?

But, in fact, this is quite common in engineering. A lot of engineering is making reliable things we don't understand!
@hillelogram When I worked on flash mem (2001), I read the literature on how it worked. At the time, the exact physical mechanism by which some things happened wasn't understood. There were theories, but multiple theories were consistent with what was observed. But we can make flash reliable!

Stuff like this is really sad to see. We need to start thinking about how we approach ITT as a profession. Hopefully the ECF will be a significant first step, but there’s lots of improvements that we could be making to help avoid this kind of thing:
1) Stop grading trainee’s lessons. We’ve started to recognise this is nonsense as part of performance management, why haven’t we called this practice into question in teacher training?
2) Stop using the Teachers’ Standards as level descriptors. They aren’t a progression model, and the need to use them as such means feedback focuses on surface level features, instead of things that might be more constructive.

It's weird that when I think of Columbine, I think of Owen Nolan, the hockey player. That's what I was doing on this morning 19 years ago. Waiting for Owen Nolan after morning practice. No idea how much that day affects me all these years later. This could ramble...
The Avalanche and Sharks were about to start a playoff series. Nolan was an ex-Av, now a Shark. I was a pretty new sports reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette. I had just moved to the Springs from Littleton.
It was at the Avs' practice facility. The Sharks had a workout there. I waited for Nolan afterward. And waited. Most players and reporters were gone. Someone from the Avs walked by, said something about a shooting at a school somewhere. It was on TV.
