#LordVishnuAvtaars
In Bhagvata Puran it is mentioned that whenever evil triumphs over good, darkness takes over light, and tyranny rules over justice, Lord Vishnu will reincarnate on earth. The purpose is to restore the cosmic order and Dharma.
(i.e. eradicate the evil forces from the earth) and guide the people to the right path. Dashavataar refers to the ten avataars of Lord Vishnu; Matsya, Koorma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Balarama, Krishna and Kalki.
1 : Matsya Avataar
During the Satyuga, Lord Vishnu took the form of Matsya or Fish. He incarnated to rescue the vedas from the demon Hayagriva who stole them from Brahma and hid them in the oceans and also to reinstate new life thus marking the beginning of a new Yuga.
2 : Koorma Avataar
Here Lord Vishnu attains the form of Koorma or tortoise. He kept the Mandara parvat afloat on his back during Samudra Manthan and showed that with perserverance and patience, nectar can be attained.
3 : Varaha Avataar
Varaha or Wild boar is an animal. This birth was taken to rescue Bhoomidevi from the clutches of the demon Hiranyaksha, thus symbolising the rescue of earth from the clutches of evil. She was carried back on the horns of the boar and placed safely.
4 : Narsimha Avataar
Narsimha or Man-lion where the Lord is neither a human nor an animal. Purpose was to eleminate the cruel and proud asura king Hiranyakashyapa who was vain enough to think that he alone was God.
5 : Vamana Avataar
In this incarnation, Lord Vishnu transforms into a human being, but not perfect physically because Vamana is supposedly a dwarf. Purpose was to foil the yagnya of Asura king Mahabali and to teach him humility.
6 : Parashurama Avataar
Vishnu incarnated this Avatar in Treta-Yuga to exterminate Kshatriya kings who strayed from their path and had become a great burden to Bhoomidevi. Parshu means axe so his name means Rama-with-the-axe. He was a brahmachari and a man with a furious temper.
Parashurama always carried an axe which he received from Lord Shiva. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Though a Brahmin’s son, he had kshatriya traits in him. He is also referred as ‘Brahma-Kshatriya’ -one who possesses both the qualities of Brahmins and kshatriyas.
7 : Shri Rama Avataar
Lord Rama is the Maryada Purushottam. Lord Vishnu took this avatar to spread Moral Values, Dharma and demolish Adharma by killing Ravana. To fulfill curses of Sage Brighu, Vrindha & Sage Narada, who cursed that he'll face the pain of separation of his wife.
8 : Balarama
The elder brother of Lord Krishna, this incarnation is supposedly Sheshnaga, who had an ansh of Lord Vishnu in him while reincarnating as Balarama. He was a great warrior and good brother, but he listened to no one and always did what he thought was right.
9 : Shri Krishna
Also known as the "Poorna Avatara", Lord Krishna performed every duty a person should and must. He ended the reign of his maternal uncle Kansa. He was the advisor of the Pandavas and charioteer and guide of Arjuna in the Mahabharata yudh.
10 : Kalki Avataar
It will be the final incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Puranas foretell that Kalki will be atop a white horse, holding a shining sword.
Currently, humans are living through the Kali Yuga period, which is roughly 432,000 years long.
This period began after Battle of Kurukshetra during the end of the reign of King Parikshit, some 5,000 years ago. Therefore, there are approximately 427,000 years of the Kali-yuga left before Kalki Avataar is said to come.
At the end of this period, the incarnation will take place, as foretold in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Lord Vishnu will take the form of the destroyer of evil.
He will then usher in another Satya-Yuga. This will be an age of truth and righteousness.
We all are aware of only 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu but as per scriptures and puranas, he has reincarnated 23 times. His appearance one last time at the end of the Kaliyuga will make it 24.
Despite the difference in form or time, all incarnations of Lord Vishnu had one common goal; to end the evil and to re-establish Dharma, the path to salvation. It is for this reason that Lord Vishnu is known as the protector and preserver of the universe.
