Indians and naturalization on the basis of religion and ethnicity have had a strange encounter almost a hundred years ago. Strange by today's standards that is.
We're talking about United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/…
US Naturalization law at time said that only "Free White Men" or Africans could become citizens. Bhagat Singh Thind, a Sikh from Amritsar serving in the US Army sought citizenship claiming as a free white man.
Thind (A Sikh) claimed that he was a High Caste Hindu 😲 (this is before the Akali movement, so I don't know if he meant Hindus as in Indians or Hindus as in Sikhs/Hindus)
He then said that high caste Hindus from the Northwestern corner of the country, i.e. Punjab are of Caucasian/Aryan stock and are pretty much white people. 😲
Then he said that thanks to the Indian caste system, which his ancestors had followed, the Aryans/Caucasians had maintained purity of blood. He embellished this by declaring that he would find it repulsive to marry a woman of the darker races. 😲
The Supreme Court of the US said that the caste system had not been good enough and there had been some intermixing with native Indian blood so Punjabis weren't white enough to be US Citizens. 🤯

The Supreme Court shuts for the winter vacation and will be back only in 2019. Which means its time for a thread of the important judgments of 2018. And there have been a few. Let me know if I miss out any
1. In K. Puttuswamy v. Union of India, the SC upheld Aadhaar while striking down some provisions of the act, which permitted private parties to insist upon Aadhaar data.
2. In Navtej Johar v. UoI the Court held Section 377 of IPC to be unconstitutional insofar as it applied to consenting adults and thus decriminalized homosexuality.

Today, I took an oath of allegiance to the United States, and became a citizen. Heady day for it. Time for a thread.
We ended up, by twist of fate, winning the lottery for asylum in the ‘80’s, and arriving in NYC as refugees. Our first apartment—a few SRO’s, shelters, and senior care facilities later—was in the South Bronx off the 4 train, in the shadow of Yankee Stadium.
My father’s first job was janitor and coat check at the Museum of Natural History; his second, a sub in Queens. My mother taught English to ESL students at F.I.T. That first Christmas was cold. But each season, 🇺🇸 drew us closer and closer.

It's nearly Labor Day weekend so let's talk about who counts as a laborer during the New Deal. By way of stating my biases, let me tell you this thread will be pro-scholarship and pro-library.
Suppose, like most historians, you're not an expert on the measure of unemployment, but you want to know how bad the Great Depression was and you want to know how much conditions improved under the New Deal.
The right thing to do would be to go to a good library, find the reference section, and look in the authoritative work: the Historical Statistics of the United States (HSUS).

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

10 years ago tonight, the moment CNN declared Obama the next President of the United States.

I was across the street from the White House, at my office's election watch party. We raced to Lafayette Park on the north side of the White House, just as the crowds began to pour in.
2. Lafayette Park filled up quickly with infectious huggers. An Australian thrust his hand at me. "Congrats, mate!"

Many tarried in the park, with strangers that had become fast friends, cheering and chanting, even after the White House went dark.

There was a new light.
3. Not too far from the chanting crowds, a group of Republican strategists held an emergency session: This coup de foudre between the public and Obama had to end after the briskest, most penurious of honeymoons, it was decided. Obama should be a one-term President, if that.

...tried to force their way into the rear entrance of the embassy building, situated at the busy junction of Nairobi’s Haile Selassie and Moi Avenues.

A brief argument ensued between embassy guards and the truck’s “arab-looking men”, who insisted they had a package to deliver...
...and needed to access the basement of the building.

Amidst the argument, a small blast went off.
