the irony that everyone wants to vilify Momentum when what Momentum did--get volunteers out of London and talking to people in the Midlands, the North, the South about what they care about--is exactly the response Labour needs to this crisis.
this interview with Becky Bond on one of the responses post-Trump victory is what I mean: thebaffler.com/interviews-for…
it's also true that Labour's community organizing strategy (@LabourByTheMany ) was in part based on doing big events in Leave constituencies and asking people *what they needed* to get those things into the manifesto: prospect.org/world/labour-s…
@LabourByTheMany lots of people are talking about what went wrong. and that's incredibly important. but also the roots of what could go very right are there in this moment and I watched them in action this election.
@LabourByTheMany The age gap problem is also a geographic problem: young people leave the small towns and deindustrialized areas and move to the cities where the jobs are.
@LabourByTheMany I talked to young organizers in Morley who were frustrated that London types kept telling them that they should have dance parties and the like and they were like--for who? our district's all pensioners.
@LabourByTheMany after Trump won I knew organizers who packed up and moved home--back to North Carolina inthesetimes.com/working/entry/… or Indiana progressive.org/dispatches/hea…
@LabourByTheMany But the thing about the UK is it's relatively small! I took day trips to some of these key marginals Labour lost--couple hours from London. You don't have to move home, but you can visit home and organize. Lots of people I know in London did that this election.
@LabourByTheMany I don't want to sound like Pollyanna--this shit's hard, and changing minds requires time, and it requires trust. It requires continuing to show up in the rain without the thrill of a possible Corbyn government weeks away.
@LabourByTheMany But people were *doing the right things* this election cycle. They were traveling, and they were canvassing, and they were listening and they were having conversations from the heart. They weren't just tweeting and making memes for their friends.
@LabourByTheMany I complain a lot that no one reports on what I report on because it matters to know about this stuff--it matters to know that you changed minds by talking to people, by proving that Labour volunteers cared enough to come listen.
@LabourByTheMany It matters that Labour under Corbyn and McDonnell DID have a strategy for getting out of London and for listening to people's needs in places like Morecambe and Motherwell, and that it is now potentially on the chopping block.
@LabourByTheMany This piece is good (and written by someone, unlike me, from here) medium.com/@BueRubner/das…
@LabourByTheMany It continues to surprise me that a lot of the responses I get basically don't know that Corbyn had put a bunch of resources into organizers on the ground. I wrote about it! NO ONE ELSE DID, apparently: prospect.org/world/labour-s…
@LabourByTheMany there's a difference too between "something did good work and wasn't enough yet" and "everything completely failed." It didn't completely fail. The polls were steadily *increasing* for Labour right up til the election despite constant vilification in the press.
@LabourByTheMany A lot of people are sharing this piece by @chakrabortty and it's good but I'd just note that what he calls for in his last paragraphs *is what @LabourByTheMany is doing* theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
