THREAD
A busy few weeks in India. I debated weighing in on CAB/NRC/UCC/370 (actually wrote 2 articles). Ultimately, I decided against it. I traditionally don't weigh in on domestic developments in India (or the U.S.), though I recognize the issues have gained int'l significance.
Just as I don't look to India for intervention on U.S. detention policies at the border with Mexico, I don't think it's the U.S. government's role to insert itself in Indian policy debates on citizenship or federalism, whatever my personal opinion might be.
I support the right of US congressmen/women, officials, experts, and media outlets to voice critical opinions of Indian policies—that's their right in a free society—but I oppose any effort to sanction India or change US policy toward India based on what's transpired to date.
I will say: 1) I'm concerned about the growing politicization of India-US ties. The bipartisan nature of support for the partnership has been one of its greatest strengths. It will undermine the foundations of the bond if it becomes too associated with one party in either country
2) The rhetoric on these issues has grown too extreme for my liking on both sides. Yes, there's been some wild misinformation about Indian policy in the Western debate. Yet, it's also troubling when gov't supporters label *any* criticism as anti-national/evidence of a conspiracy.
