Been working on some graphs for our annual @WasonCenter State of the Commonwealth Survey, out today. 55% of voters approve of the results of the election, which had Democrats gain control of both chambers of the state's General Assembly. And the poll finds they support a host of
proposals being advanced by the new Dem majority that had long been held at bay by Rer control of the legislature on issues ranging from gun control measures, automatic voter registration, to minimum wage, to marijuana decriminalization. ERA ratification enjoys widepread support.
Robust support for expanding background checks on guns to include all gun sales (currently private sales, including gun show sales are exempt) & "red flag" laws. While still majority, assault weapons ban is more contentious (54% support). Expanded concealed carry deeply unpopular
Also unpopular, allowing local governments the authority t remove or alter Confederate monuments, something currently prohibited by state law. Data here suggests this issue would be a "third rail" type issue for the Dem majority to tackle.
Two voting rights reforms were tested. And this is IMP, we had a mistake on the 1st report, both are robustly popular. 74% support expanded, no-excuse early absentee voting and 63% support automatic voter registration, which would increase participation in the state's elections.
We asked voters if the legislature should pass the 2nd stage of the redistricting reform package that passed the legislature last session. It must pass back-to-back session to amend the state's constitution. 70% want to see this happen.
Finally, the minimum wage proposal and the marijuana decriminalization proposals both tested very well. 71% of voters support raising the state's minimum wage to $10.10 an hour and 83% want marijuana decriminalized.
