John Augustus Otunba-Payne (1839- 1906)

Lawyer, Writer.

Born in Sierra Leone a Prince of the Gbelegbuwa Royal Family of Ijebu-Ode. The name Payne is an anglicized version of Adepeyin his original surname. He moved to Lagos in 1862 and started work as a Police clerk.

He later rose to become a prosecutor and the first indigenous Registrar of the Old Supreme Court. In 1881 Payne was commissioned to organize the first census in Lagos.
He also wrote several publications and was very influential. He owned the magnificent 'Orange House' mansion at Tinubu Square. On Thursday 20 December 1906 Payne was tragically murdered by unknown assailants at home. The murder was never solved.
