Buddha head overgrown by fig tree in Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya Historical Park, Thailand
The influence of Hinduism on Thai culture is fascinating to me. The Thais have their own version of the Ramayana called the Ramakien

In 1989, Indian poet Satya Vrat Shastri translated the Ramakien into Sanskrit

Now – Rama was supposedly born in Ayodhya, and there's a city with that name in UP, India...

and the Thais had a whole *kingdom* named Ayutthaya from 1350 – 1767. Seems like Rama was a royal title for all Thai kings then

Thailand is typically described and understood as a Buddhist country

Indonesia a Muslim one

both countries have Garuda (a Hindu figure – legendary king of the birds, Vahana/mount of Lord Vishnu) as prominent features

I love this about Southeast Asia
also featured on Indonesia's national emblem

seems like everyone loves Garuda, he's like the south / southeast asian bald eagle 😂

2. Balinese Garuda
3. Tibetian Garuda
4. Thai Garuda
