I've a bit of a story to tell, about patriotism, Americans and being a vet.

So I wear one of those black vet's hats. It's got some earned badges as pins on it, and a 101st pin.

It might be considered "bling," in a miltary sense.

Anyway, folks see it and thank me sometimes; always an uncomfortable encounter for me for I was just a kid back then.

I figure because I live in a fairly rural area there's prolly more "thank you for your service" remarks because military service typically hits small towns harder. A town of 1000 losing ten or twelve working age adults is a big deal.

On the 50th anniversary of the signing of The Declaration of Independence, the mayor of D.C., one Roger Weightman, asked Thomas Jefferson to attend.

Jefferson was in poor health, and very near the end of his life.

So Jefferson wrote a letter to decline. He knew the journey was impossible for him. Ten days after penning this letter, Jefferson was dead.

While Jefferson is not a perfect messenger, (none of our founders were) his letter explained what #IndependenceDay meant to him.

Yesterday, a woman with no prior criminal history is accused of taking $19 worth of merchandise from a store. She is arrested instead of given a citation at the scene. She has a $100 bond set. 1/4
Today, she is appointed a lawyer with @DefendShelbyCo The State of Tennessee agrees to dismiss her case in exchange for a $50 "donation" to charity. Being locked up, she doesn't have $50 on her. 2/4
Her attorney calls @JustCity901 and requests the help of the Memphis Community Bail Fund, which posts the $100 cash bond. The woman will be released today, likely come back to court in July with $50, and have her case dismissed and expunged from her record. 3/4
