My #2019ReadingGoal was to read a book per week. Books have been most cherished and loved companions ever since I was the little girl who loved the library who grew up to be a writer. Here’s the thread about what I read this year
Here are the titles and authors of the 52 books I read this year for my #2019ReadingGoal
Of the 52 books:
- 47 were by women (cis and trans)
- 3 were by men
- 2 were by non-binary or gender non-confirming people
- At least 19 were by queer authors and-or featured #LGBTQ characters
- 24 were in translation
- Authors were from at least 28 countries

I remember what I was doing at this time in 1999: preparing for the holidays and the Millennium. BUT, I can’t for the life of me remember what I was doing in 2009 at this time. Do you?

1999 Me lived in Cairo & was visiting NYC for Xmas & Millennium. It was my 1st visit since my family 1st went to NYC (& US) in 1982. And holy fuck! I realized I would love that city more than I would ever love any man or woman.Soon to be ex-husband understood & was jealous of NYC

Do #authors know how to use Amazon to find and research important book data? It's #bookdata that'll help you determine your comparative book titles, where it fits within your genre(s), and perform post-mortem marketing research.

Would any #indieauthors like to know how?
2/ Start by diving into the most niche genre/category you can within the Amazon ecosystem. For this instance, we’re going to use Mystery/Suspense.
3/ The next page gives you two sections that are important for your research. Are you looking for more relevant comparative titles? What’s coming soon? Which book(s) will your book competing with on #pubday?

Let’s say we’re only interested in other books in our genre.

You voted! I found a bar! So tonight, we’re reading Michael Wolff’s Seige: Trump Under Fire which promises to teach us very little but from which we can learn a lot!

Let’s very briefly explain that and then I’ll start the intro
So, the first thing to know about this book is that all of its sources are known liars. Steve Bannon features prominently. The staffers that were allowed to remain anonymous still worked in this White House, and that tells you about their respect for reality versus spin.
Second thing is that Wolff isn’t particularly well known for his unrelenting sourcing and meticulous retellings. Mostly he’s the most accessy of access journos, by which I mean usually you don’t get invited to see the sausage being made if they don’t want or need you to.

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay (& because I'm having trouble focusing on my own writing), I'm updating my syllabus for this fall's Women, Gender, & Islam seminar.
I've been teaching this seminar every couple of years since I started at BU in 2006. Lots of other things have changed in that time but I've clung stubbornly to the book-a-week format for this course. (GIF: Raccoon clings stubbornly to leg; refuses to let go)
It's a mixed upper-level-undergrad/graduate student course. That has pros & cons, but at its best it makes for lively discussions.
