Usually when I'm back in LA I tweet mean stuff (about my home town! it's allowed!) that I don't really mean. But this time I'll say, seriously: the suburban layout really changes the way life is experienced, in ways it is hard to fix
Ever since I stopped living here full-time (at 18), arriving in places where I could actually walk around and experience the world at human size just made me feel a lot better about everything, life that way is just more enjoyable.
Then for the last few years I lived in Jakarta, which is at the far end of the wrong side of the spectrum, so much worse than LA. Everything requires sitting in traffic in or on a little machine. When I got back from there to São Paulo I just felt this rush of joy. I could walk!
Idunno I guess the lesson here is that if anyone out there is building any cities at the moment, let's try to make sure they are human-sized? As a final downer I wrote this last year about how the whole world is doing the exact opposite popula.com/2018/12/18/stu…
