I wrote a letter to the editor that was.... well, not published.
I will tweet it instead:

Dear Editor,
I read the published comments from AIMCo CEO Kevin Uebelein on investment independence.

What he failed to mention was that the AIMCo Act provides a specific legal mechanism for political interference. It must have slipped his mind. To wit, section 19 of the Act reads: “The Treasury Board may issue directives that must be followed by the Corporation, the board, #fail

or both, in carrying out their powers and duties under this Act and the regulations.” That is right, Treasury Board can issue “directives” to both AIMCo and the AIMCo Board.

He is doing taxpayers no service in neglecting to mention this. #failedtomention #isthatmisleading

Any discussion of AIMCo’s independence must include discussion of section 19.

Mr. Uebelein reassures all of us that the current government has not interfered in investment decisions at AIMCo.

That’s great, but he does not give us the same reassurance about past or future governments. These and other issues are substantive and should have been resolved long before legislation was voted on. #petrosexual

In fact, given his experience in capital markets, I would like to hear from Mr. Uebelein on the legal protections in place for government related capital pools in other jurisdictions. I think you will find that AIMCo is seriously lacking in this regard. #handsoffmypension
