It's an absolutely terrible idea. If they go straight from their parents' homes into this environment, they'll view "total surveillance" as normal for the rest of their lives. What's more, if colleges don't fight hard against this, now, it will become the norm.
Parents will demand it, because parents are very poor at letting go. It's the colleges that *have* to insist--and unite to insist--that it's a key part of education to learn to be responsible without being under surveillance 24 hours a day.
It is just amazing that I wrote that sentence about the United States, on the eve of 2020; it's not science-fiction or some misanthropic dystopian fantasy; and not only are there Americans willing to argue the contrary case, but the contrary case will probably win.
