In 1994, CA Rs under their Gov Pete Wilson, as the white racial majority in that state was in its sunset, pushed & passed prop 187, which sought to end state services to undocumented populations by extolling voters to "stop the take-over." The racist rhetoric politically isolated
CA Latinos from the GOP, but just as importantly, it set into motion grassroots activism and protests that would go on to form the state's next generation of political leadership and infrastructure. The reason a D won Jeff Flake's vacant senate seat in '18 & AZ has a good chance
breaking for Ds in 2020 is bc of similar backlash-this time to the effect of anger & isolation from AZ's harsh 2010 anti-immigration law & reign of terror Latino's lived under from Joe Arpaio, whose federal civil rights crimes were pardoned by Trump.

Watched @chucktodd's @MeetThePress special on disinformation & the media crisis. Its clear he recognizes *some* of the issues w his show as of late. I'm glad he focused it on having on @deanbaquet & @PostBaron- the editors of The Times & The Post. I talk to audiences about the
process by which a story gets into print at these papers- the scrupulous vetting & editorial process, esp in the Trump Era, where any mistake is a disaster. And I talk about accountability- about what happens at a major outlet when something intentionally gets screwed up, like
the Rolling Stone UVA rape story. About how careers are ended. And I talk about incentives & how looking at people's incentives (combined w their constraints) are a good way at judging reliability. Journalists have incentives to get a hot story, but they have major constraints-

About 80% of people socialized into a political party or ideology will stick with it. The other 20% will switch and make Thanksgivings forever awkward thereafter. BC I am one of the 20% "rejectors" I have always been fascinated in explaining why rejectors do it, bc there ARE
costs. Based on political science and psychology research, the answer is probably based on personality types and perhaps biology. I hope to do some research on this question at some point.

Student Evaluations of Teaching are useless at evaluating your ability to teach & are biased against women, people of color & foreign faculty. They erode instructional quality & discourage innovative pedagogy. Profs teach only to not be hurt by them. They should be banned.
here is what we "learned" about my teaching from my falls evals. Now, given that the evals never really directly ask the students if they learn anything, which I would assume would be the point of the class, this year I added in that direct question so at least I know I
accomplished that goal, and the tangential goal I also bring to my intro to Amer Gov class, which is to try to get them to be more likely to vote in the future. But again, I added these 4 questions, a practice you are discouraged against doing bc it might backfire badly.

As the work on building Amravati, the new capital city AP, comes to a grinding halt, concerns emerge about Amravati (APCRDA) bonds held by Franklin MF (~Rs. 1000 Cr) and Birla MF (Rs. ~300 Cr). Thread 1/11
During the Chandrababu Govt, Amravati received political as well as financial patronage. Now, with Jagan Reddy being incharge of the state, the project is in shambles. World Bank & ADB pulled out of the project and the Government is looking for reasons to scrap it. 2/n
The bonds issued to support the financing needs of the project were subscribed by Franklin MF and Birla MF. The bonds are guaranteed by the AP Govt but it's not sure if the Govt would keep servicing the bonds. The risk of lending to a state govt has again come to the fore. 3/11

Violent crime is itself a form of policing. This is most obvious with misogynistic & racist terror attacks, intimate partner violence, hate crimes, and white clllar crime, but it is not unique to these.
What’s more, the connection between organized crime, mafias, etc and states is well known. States a largely rent extracting criminal rackets, which, thru strategic jostling by their members, & thru incidental benefits to elites & commerce, formalize into states.
Furthermore, one need only look at the fact that enforcement of drug prohibition, the criminalization of sex work, acts of police brutality, & social dislocation are all criminogenic—prohibition explains up to 75% of murder rates, criminalization of sex work up to 50% of assault

1. California isn’t just a place, but a dream.
2. In the American mythos, California represented the end of the journey, the land where the dispossessed & forgotten could start again, where “Okies” who fled the Depression searched for relief & veterans of the WWII discovered a middle-class paradise.
3. And what’s most incredible is that, for a time, that is exactly what California, USA was for so many American Citizens.
