It’s terrible, but true. Trump’s campaign’s coordination with Russian interference happened right out in the open for everyone to see, but hesitance to believe any politician would sell out the country in such a brazen way gifted them cover.

Every step along the way Trump has benefitted from America’s lack of imagination as to what someone would be willing to do, how someone could actively engage in bad faith, seek power through cruelty, marshal people’s worst instincts.

And as the senate trial approaches and the election looms, we have to be prepared for a terrified president to do anything to stay in power. We have to enter the new year vigilant and ready for all-out assaults on democracy. Denial of electoral results. Everything.
