Thread on AGEISM

1. Yesterday I was reprimanded for calling out generational bigotry/prejudice by suggesting ageism was no different to racism or sexism.

People of colour are forever saying "don't tell us what is racist". Women are forever saying "don't tell us what is sexist"
2. As a person of age, I am saying "don't tell me what is ageist".

We know ageism is a huge problem in Australia. The largest group on Newstart?

3. Those finding it hardest to gain employment? Try seeking a job in your 60s - I now, I'm trying. Throw in a healthy dose of sexism as well and you have this:

4. Homelessness. Plus some older Boomers and many of the Silent Generation are being "cared" for in sub-standard nursing homes.

I'd be interested in hearing if ageism is also a huge issue in other countries, western countries in particular.

5. We didn't ask for the label "Boomers". Personally I disagree with the existence of these generational labels. But we seem to be stuck with them. The oldest Boomers could easily be parents of the youngest Boomers, so it makes no sense. Gen X for some reason only spans 11 years.
6. Like it or not, we've got labels. For others to start using it as a term to describe arseholes is ageism. The arsehole in Cobargo manhandling the woman was an arsehole because he is an arsehole, not because he is a Booomer. Morrison also manhandled her and he is NOT a Boomer.
7. I have direct experience of sexism - I lived through the years women could not get bank loans or had to leave jobs when they got married. I never got paid maternity leave. I have lived with racism by association - watched as my husband's change was placed on the counter
8. rather than the shop assistant have to risk touching his hand (tiny example only here).

Now, day after day after day I am confronted with my whole generation being smeared. Half the time the insults are actually being hurled at older Gen X people. I got told yesterday that
9. using Boomer as an insult was about attitude, not age. So how do you think saying "using the n-word is about attitude not colour" would be received? If the similarity can't be seen I suggest it may be because there is more than ageism going on here.
10. In my life I have met arseholes of every age, every religion, every gender, every skin tone. There is no arsehole age, religion, ethnicity.

Don't tell me what ageism is. As an aged person, I will tell you what ageism is.

Look at the ages of the IPA "Fellows".
11. Is there an actual Boomer among them? If you want a new word to use as an insult for attitude, how about IPAer?

What's the average age of the current government? I'm not researching it, I'm asking the question. They are in charge, not my homeless, unemployed, over 55 cohort
12. that is struggling to survive in many cases.

Dutton, Taylor, Porter, Frydenberg - NOT Boomers. Yet THESE are the "adults in charge".

Take your ageist microaggressions and shove them.
