Mumbai, Gateway of India, 12.49am
It’s 1.08am, more people joining than leaving. We have poetry, song and bright lights. And we have a flag.
Because boss, this city does not sleep. 1.38am, Mumbai
Chants of azadi at 2.13am, with Umar Khalid.
At 2.45am, there were hundreds at Gateway of India, loud and unviolent. Many were determined to stay till morning. These are dark days but take heart, for we have candlelight and poetry (and internet).
“Kabootar apni side hai, Gateway occupied hai.”
Most cops (men + women) are in vans or in the shade. The slogans and poetry continue. There are too many packets of vada pav/sandwiches coming around. Placards are being painted. Neither the flag nor the anger is flagging. Gateway of India has been occupied. #OccupyGateway
The crowd seems to be double of what we saw last night. Video by photographer Hashim Badani. #OccupyGateway
12.58am, not a kabutar in sight but #OccupyGatewayOfIndia is in full force.
Mumbai Police has said no one is detained and #OccupyGateway protest has been “relocated” to Azad Maidan (which is generally designated a protest site). Protesters say they were forcefully removed and that they’ve been told they’ll only be let out in the evening.
Update from one of the #OccupyGateway protesters who is not detained, but just can’t leave Azad Maidan.
#OccupyGatewayOfIndia has been called off. Approximately 50-odd protesters are at Azad Maidan along with a LOT of male and female policemen. Mumbai Police had initially said that protesters could leave if they gave their names, but there’s lack of clarity on that right now.
Five hours after they were relocated, protesters are free to leave Azad Maidan after giving their names & ID to Mumbai Police. Those who don’t have ID have been asked to give phone nos & addresses. Some were told charges may be filed under sections 68/69 of the Bombay Police Act.
Not leaving Gateway of India when the police arrived with reinforcements at the dawn may be seen as violating sections 68 + 69 of Bombay Police Act. Cops say it won’t create a criminal record (but cops also said at one point that no one would be booked for anything).
