A bit of trivia: the United States didn’t ratify the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict until March 2009.

We reserved a “military necessity” clause (e.g. if we deem a target a necessary, it no longer has protection) 1/
We also completely excluded nuclear and other non-traditional weapons from the protocols (e.g. if we use nukes, there is no obligation to protect anything). As far as loopholes go, this might not bode well for certain Iranians.

Oh, and hey, Iran excluded countries they don’t “recognize” from their obligations to protect when they ratified it. (e.g. they didn’t want to get hauled into international court over “cultural stuff” when they try to wipe Israel from the map). Nice people those Iranians. 3/3
