10 years ago I spent some time in Beijing working on a project which helped enhance the advocacy capabilities of Chinese environmental NGOs (ENGOs) /1
Together with American and Chinese colleagues we organised a national summit for ENGOs, supported local pilot initiatives and published a Chinese-language book on the subject of collective policy entrepreneurship /2
Fast forward to 2020 and such capacity building work seems like a fading dream. Under Xi Jinping we have seen the rise of an increasingly totalitarian Chinese security state /3
To defend its authority at home and abroad, the Chinese Communist Party has declared an ideological war on open societies /4
The CCP's ideological war is directed against anyone within or outside China who believes in ideological pluralism, constitutionalism, democracy, human rights and the rule of law /5
In the following I would like to highlight a number of key party documents and/or laws which make up the CCP's metabolising censorship regime /6
Over the past few years I have noticed that many people outside China—including NGO practitioners, journalists and academics—are not aware of these party edicts or laws. This leads to an information asymmetry which undermines a critical engagement with China /7

This is a possible and highly worrisome scenario for the future of Hong Kong. Let's pray that it will not come to pass. But let's take @AvengingDark's vision seriously.

There are numerous factors we need to add to the equation, on the global, national and local level /1
@AvengingDark In a perverse way a military crackdown in Hong Kong will lead to a much stronger int'l reaction than for example towards the cultural genocide in Xinjiang. There are many foreigners living in HK. And despite capital flight outsiders still own a lot of real estate in Hong Kong /2
@AvengingDark These outsiders include elite members of the CCP, many of whom channel their ill-gotten wealth through Hong Kong. I would love to hear from insiders how many shell companies are registered in HK to facilitate such money laundering through Hong Kong /3

Children and Phones.
I have 4 children aged 2-8. 2 years ago, we spent some time with relatives. I was shocked that almost every child grabbed my phone the minute I put it down and began to search for games.
My own children were like fishes out of water. They couldn't relate
I eventually had to hide my phone for peace to reign but the minute I forgot it on the couch, someone would leap at it.
This was strange because in my house, phones are personal. If it rings, you bring it to the owner. That is the only reason a child should touch my phone
If you already have teens or older kids who won't get off the phone you bought, this may not be for you.
But if you are just about to start a family or have babies (0-3) I want to encourage you not to allow them access to your phones. Do not buy a phone for a child under 15

Years ago, for the longest time, I didn't want to marry a Christian brother.

The ones I knew were always so cloaked with spirituality that I couldn't find or connect with their humanity.
Or they looked so scruffy that it was impossible to be attracted to them, no matter how good looking they were.

Don't even get me started on those ones who rather than tell you they liked, were attracted to or loved you, would hide under, "The Lord told me that you're my wife."
Or is it the brothers with the Messiah Complex? Those ones who boldly acted like marrying you was a huge favour they were about to magnanimously grant you?

For these reasons and a few more, I just wanted a good man, preferably not of my faith.

On Sept. 11, 2001, everyone watched in horror as our country was attacked. Here is a story about a friend who died on 9/11 as an #American hero. I first met John years ago, we had both trained and worked in the business of corporate finance out of #NYC. John was a good man.
After working his way through the difficult first years many new executives face as they battle to make a career for themselves on Wall Street, John had worked at several firms with positions of increasing responsibility. It was difficult for him, because John was a nice guy.
By 2000, John had won enough battles to earn respect on Wall Street. He had become Managing Director of boutique investment firm Sandler O'Neill, focused on mergers & acquisitions of regional banks. John worked from his office on the 104th floor of One World Trade Center in #NYC.

If you think about art history, there's a WHOLE lot more art about religion than there is about science.
This reflects reality! Religion has been around a lot longer than science, and the Catholic church in particular spent a ton of money on art.

I've enjoyed Rick's writing style since his snarky anti-Trump pieces in Politico well before the nomination. But it's blog-style, not opposite-the-masthead Op-Ed style. I also love to find the unlikely off-color metaphor and goose it for all it's worth ;)
A few years ago, I spent some time with Lyndon LaRouche watchers (the old FACTnet forum that migrated to a message board), and it's important not to be too glib with the comparison -- although a devastating comparison exists. LaRouche led a crazy religious-grade personality cult.
LaRouche didn't innovate anything ideologically, but for a time he was a perfect synthesis of the anti-establishment, antiwar left, extreme statism, 50s sci-fi-grade technocracy (Fusion Power Now!), all with the promise of occluded knowledge only Master Lyndon could impart.
