Don't get me wrong. I still run a highly organized and purposeful course with clear intentions, but inside those things it's up to students to determine what's meaningful and act accordingly. In my experience this results in a more rigorous experience than previously.
While the transition took time, having crossed over, I can't imagine going back to an approach predicated on tracking and accountability from the top. Not only did it hamper student growth, it wore me out mentally and emotionally.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the enormous influence teachers/mentors can have over students and how we can unintentionally cause damage even when we're trying to encourage or shape. I had an incident as a grad student that's stuck with me for almost 25 years.
When I was in my final year of my MFA, we had a visiting writer as a guest who read stories and did one-on-one conferences with all graduating 3rd years. It was a rare opportunity for that kind of encounter.
This writer was already well-accomplished and has gone on to become one of the most beloved figures in the wider literary world (for good reason), and I'm certain they meant me no harm, but their response to my story was essentially, "You can't pull off what you're attempting."

End the practices that rely on standardization and assessment, respect student autonomy, support the chronically under-resourced and reduce the amount of school-related stress and anxiety and then let's see how we're doing.
Do all that and you could even give the same lousy tests they're using now and I bet you'd see progress because students wouldn't see school as a grim march through proficiencies, but a place oriented around curiosity and learning.
Let's measure the "atmosphere" in schools. Are students hungry? Are they supported? Is their curiosity respected and fostered? Are they anxious and depressed? How much on-on-one time do they get with their teachers?
