As expected, I was booed to the rafters at the #ORFC2020 (Oxford Real Farming Conference) yesterday. But I felt it was my duty to turn up and explain what I believe climate breakdown will do to farming, and why #farmfree foods are likely to be essential.
I've spent my working life telling people what they don't want to hear, so I'm accustomed to receptions like this. But I don't think shooting the messenger is going to help farmers understand and face what is coming.
In fairness, there was also a good amount of applause, and some people were definitely receptive. I'm grateful to the @ORFC for inviting me to speak.

If the media were a person, who would it be?
I would say Donald Trump: impulsive, thoughtless, obsessed with wealth, power and noise.
These tendencies have distorted every aspect of our politics. National conversations are dominated by current trivia and random impulses, rather than by the deep issues that really matter. Noisy buffoons are elevated. The voices of wealth and power are amplified.
This is why the cameras are all clustered in Davos, literally the last place in which effective change will happen or honest self-reflection will occur. It's pure theatre, directed by some of the richest people on Earth. And the media loves it.

A few of us have been trying to warn about this for a while, and have been scoffed at by foresters and conservationists. It's a real issue, and denying or dismissing it helps no one.
This is one reason why we should apply @SteveCJjones's hierarchical approach to woodland creation:
1. Natural regeneration wherever possible.
2. If it's not possible, assisted regeneration (clearing competing vegetation).
3. Only if 1 and 2 won't work, tree planting.

The police have always worked for established power against those who challenge it. But even by their standards, this is ridiculous.

Based on these criteria, I wonder whether there's any successful democracy or justice movement, at any point in history, that today's police would NOT have put on a terrorist watch list.
The other, unbelievably stupid and staggeringly obvious, thing about including peaceful groups like @GreenpeaceUK, @PETAUK and @XRebellionUK on the list is that it diverts attention and resources from tackling real terrorists and extremists.

I have been thinking a lot about the @nytimes piece on #womeninmedicine . On the surface that article could have been written about me. Friends &family have said I have the ultimate work/life balance, but they don't understand the guilt & frustration that came with it (thread)
@nytimes 2/I was (am) that super smart, self motivated, high achieving person who became a doctor. 1st choice college, med school, residency (EM), & fellowship (Tox). And now I only work per diem in the ED- not a bad thing, but not where I thought I'd be. How did it happen?

When I hear ppl saying that we need systems change and not culture change to address #climate breakdown, I think ppl overstate the ability of top down law reform to change culture. Law reform is not particularly effective and changing culture. 1/
Guess what - the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments did not achieve the end of slavery, equality, or the right to vote for African Americans. Slave state culture maintained near total African servitude, inequality, and vote suppression for a century b/c it was in the culture. 2/
Prohibition was written into the constitution. People did not stop drinking b/c it was in the culture, and the temperance forces didn’t give resources to enforce prohibition b/c it drinking really didn’t affect them except philospophically. 3/

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level
