Yevgeniy Nikulin is linked to Alexei Belan, who was indicted in March 2017 along with Dmitry Dokuchaev for hacking Yahoo. Dokuchaev was arrested by the Russians in December 2016 on charges of treason.

What if the FBI had to decide if continuing to use Nikulin as a source was outweighed by learning of possible Russian collusion with Trump team? Would they need to burn that source to stop his hacks for Russia?
Hopefully we learn more as Nikulin’s Pretrial Conference approaches on 2/19/20. The actual trial is set for March 9, 2020.
