What we just broke on air @CNN: Bernie Sanders told Elizabeth Warren in a private meeting in December 2018 that he did not believe a woman could win, according to four sources.

Full story here, including Sanders' aggressive on-the-record pushback: cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
@CNN Sanders and Warren met at her DC apartment. Both agreed that should they become 2020 rivals, they should remain civil and avoid attacking one another, so as not to hurt the progressive movement.

(Hello "non-agression pact" we've been discussing all year) cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
@CNN They also discussed how to take on Trump. Warren offered two main reasons she believed she'd be strong candidate: 1. Economy 2. Women.

Sanders responded he did not believe a woman could win, per 2 people Warren directly spoke to and 2 others familiar. cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
@CNN Bernie Sanders gave an aggressive, on the record pushback to the CNN reporting.

It begins: "It is ludicrous to believe that at the same meeting where Elizabeth Warren told me she was going to run for president, I would tell her that a woman couldn't win" cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
@CNN Sanders goes on to say: "It's sad that, three weeks before the Iowa caucus and a year after that private conversation, staff who weren't in the room are lying about what happened." cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
@CNN Sanders also acknoweldges that gender did come up in their meeting:

"What I did say that night was that Donald Trump is a sexist, a racist and a liar who would weaponize whatever he could. Do I believe a woman can win in 2020? Of course!" FULL STATEMENT cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
@CNN That private meeting in December 2018 was first reported at the time by @jmartNYT -- his story then said that neither senator sought each other's support, and that they did not try to dissuade one another from running in the 2020 election. nytimes.com/2018/12/13/us/…
New: In a new statement, Elizabeth Warren says about her meeting with Bernie Sanders in 2018: “I thought a woman could win; he disagreed.”
Jeff Weaver: “I think there was a discussion about Trump, misogyny, sexism in politics, and the difficulty of running in the era of Trump for women... But those conversations can sometimes get misconstrued.” cnn.com/2020/01/13/pol…
