Why should we care about Carbon Capture & Storage?

Because if we want to keep ‘well below 2°C’ it may actually be a rather handy tool to have in the toolbox…

Why? THREAD…

CO₂ emissions have a cumulative effect & CO₂ emissions must be net-zero to stop temperatures from increasing further.

CCS can help:
1. Reduce emissions from burning fossils
2. Contribute to CO₂ removal

We have lots of technologies to do the lions share of mitigation (solar, wind, EVs, etc), but at some stage we hit the hard-to-mitigate sectors.

This is where CCS really matters…

In a mitigation portfolio, CCS helps:
1. conventional abatement in hard-to-mitigate sectors (brown)
2. CO₂ removal to offset too-expensive-to-mitigate sectors (dark green = brown in 2100)
3. CO₂ removal to reduce temperatures (light green, leading to net-negative emissions)

The problem is that scenarios seem to *love* CCS & use it at scale.

The median across 1.5°C and 2°C scenarios is ~10GtCO₂ per year in 2050, that basically requires a new CCS facility every day from now to 2050!

5/
A lot of the CCS is used for CO₂ removal (Bioenergy with CCS), but this varies with model & socioeconomics.

Is CCS the problem here, or did large-scale BECCS just give CCS a bad name? CCS on fossil fuels & industry (green) is perhaps more important?

6/
CCS is used in all regions, again, it varies with model and socioeconomics.

By 2050, Europe could have 1GtCO₂ per year according to models, or about 1000 CCS facilities.

Models show that if CCS is not used, the costs of mitigation double (from IPCC AR5).

More importantly, something else has to fill the gap that CCS leaves. Less CCS means more bioenergy, more non-fossil sources, more stranded fossil fuels.

8/
If fossil fuels are your thing, scenarios use a lot less fossil fuels if you don’t have CCS. If you are a country that wants to prolong the value of fossil fuels, then CCS becomes essential!

Fossil fuels still need to be radically reduced, but slightly slower with CCS...

9/
The sheer scale of CCS, particularly when used with bioenergy, gets people worried (including me). That does not mean we dump CCS, rather, we think carefully & find niche applications where it is needed.

“Everything in moderation” applies also to mitigation. There is no silver bullet, only silver buckshot.

Every technology has to play its part, including CCS.

Love it or hate it, we need CCS (for deep mitigation).

The challenge is that current policies are unlikely to incentivise CCS, & so other (additional) policy mechanisms are needed to support the development and deployment CCS.
