As I said in my apology today for a transphobic tweet in 2011, I’ve learned a lot since then and I want to acknowledge just how much of my learning is thanks to #LGBTQ activists. In 2015, I was on a panel with Germaine Greer at #Mumbai Litfest where I disagreed with her 👇🏽
As I said in my tweets at the time, much of my learning came from #LGBTQ activism in #India. When Greer made transphobic remarks at our joint session in #Mumbai, I disagreed and I remember the audience also disagreed. I also learned in 2015 to separate trans and woman.
I learned to put a space in between trans and woman and ways to show solidarity with communities who are subjected to multiple oppressions.
I’m interested in expanding feminist work & my work esp since Egyptian revolution in 2011,my 1st book in 2015,my 2nd book in 2019 has been aimed at transnational feminism & ways to be in solidarity.Meeting feminist and/both LGBTQ activists in my travels has been central.
I am cis. 2 cis white lesbians followed me to dinner after a lecture I gave in #London in 2015 to harangue me for supporting trans rights. A gay Saudi man & a bisexual Saudi woman at dinner w/me & I defended trans rights - because intersectionality.
Today, @christineburns kindly sent me a copy of Trans Britain,a book she edited which tells a history of over 60 years of trans life in Britain.

“The motive for creating this was that people so often behave and talk as though trans existence is a recent fad,” Christine told me
So if you want to learn, get reading.

Follow accounts of trans activists and advocacy groups from around the world.

I will mention again @irantiorg a media advocacy organization defending rights of lesbian, intersex, and transgender persons in Africa
The responsibility is on you to learn from what’s there already and to focus on justice and fighting vs patriarchy & its attendant oppressions.
