Every MLK day weekend for the last six or seven years, I've spent some time listening to the "American Dream," a speech that King gave at Drew University in 1964.

It's a long, beautiful speech and serves as a good mental reset, if you need it. depts.drew.edu/lib/archives/o…
I've been listening to it ever since I heard it on a kind of surreal day in 2010 (longer ago than I thought). Glenn Beck held a rally on the National Mall on the 47th anniversary of MLK's "I have a Dream" speech.

Yes, that Glenn Beck.

I went down to see the circus.
Afterwards, I walked up the Mall, away from the Lincoln Memorial towards the Capitol. Along the way, I came across a smaller rally where people had set up loudspeakers playing MLK speeches. I sat under a tree and listened.
I think it's the first time I ever heard one of King's longer speeches. I remember being surprised to hear him crack jokes, even dark ones.

It made him seem a little less saintly, more human, in a good way (to me, at least).
