Six or seven years ago, I was working on a story very similar to this one, about the role of traditional ecological knowledge in the face of climate change and how it could lead communities to more adaptability. Mine was focused on Alaska and other northern communities.
If you hear me talking about resource grabs during or after climate crises or catastrophes it is directly informed by the research I was doing, up to and including interviewing members of the Arctic Council. Back then, everyone was excited about the Northwest Passage melting.
You know why? Because it opened up more trade routes.

Anyway, I'm very happy to see this story getting out there, although I hate that it took so much to get us there. I really was trying to help head off catastrophes we all saw coming.

Not a single editor wanted to take the story. "Where's the interest?" they asked.
Ditto for Our Children's Trust, a story I was also trying to pitch in 2012 and 2013. You might be familiar with that story now, too. This was just a couple of days ago: vox.com/2020/1/17/2107…
It's been really weird seeing all my old offbeat interests become mainstream discussions, but years later. I hope traditional knowledge -- ecological and otherwise -- continues to be part of the conversation. It's vital now.
