The 2016 Democratic primary map. Blue is Clinton, Green is Sanders.

The Rust Belt places where Clinton beat Sanders were in urban areas with larger concentrations of black voters.
Exit polling, however, suggests that age was a huge factor in terms of the black primary vote in 2016 (as it is in 2020). Younger black voters were far more inclined to support Sanders than their elders.

Today, on MLK day, thousands of white guys dressed up and armed themselves like they're on patrol in Iraq or Afghanistan, only they're in Richmond, Virginia. Most of them support the President who claims he wants to bring all of our soldiers home, so they can do this?
The images from today's rally should make it clear what gun rights mean to these folks. These are not people armed to defend themselves against a home invader. These are people who are drilling for armed combat, in their own country.
Just to fully spell out the logic here...training for armed combat in your own country means that you are preparing for the time when you will have to shoot at your fellow citizens, including people legally authorized to enforce the laws.

I feel like progressives should be talking more about what the Democrats' strategy is for a) keeping control of the House & winning the Senate & b) who the next generation of their leaders will be post-Pelosi and Schumer. Presidents are important, but they don't pass legislation.
Accomplishing the sorts of long-term structural change that progressives desire will be the work of a generation, not one administration (assuming the current rules and structure of the US gov't remain the same).
Building the sort of broad and deep coalition capable of making such change will be hard work. Look how baggy and oftentimes divided Reagan's coalition was...but they made it work for long enough to dramatically shift the course of American politics.

The Oregon political watchers in this podcast made it seem as if another GOP walkout would not be surprising. There have been a few tweaks to the climate bill they sabotaged last year with a walk out, but probably not enough. spreaker.com/user/oregonpub…
Meanwhile, the "grassroots" organization that backed those GOP walkout senators last summer has had some internal squabbling...and now appears to have been taken over by some seasoned conservative operatives. wweek.com/news/state/201…

#democratic primary: It's 12/1 and just over 2 months to the IA caucuses. So what the heck is going on in this primary that's being conducted in the middle of a constitutional crisis? Well, the bottom line is that young voters are steadier in their preferences than older voters.
Taking @surveyusa polling from Aug-Nov, we see that the 18-34 vote has barely moved for Warren (-1), Pete (+1), Biden (+2) and Harris (-1). For Bernie, there was a big drop of -10 from Aug to Sept, but has since stabilized at 35, highest of any candidate in that demo.
Among 35-49 voters, since Aug, Liz is +2, Pete (0), Bernie (-1), Joe (-5) and Harris (-4). Among 50-64 voters: Warren (+2), Pete (0), Bernie (-1), Biden (-4), Harris (-5). Among 65+: Warren (-13), Pete (+7), Bernie (+2), Joe (-4), Harris (-5).

#ElizabethWarren's bill reminds me of Romney's advice to youths in 4/2012, "Borrow money, if you have to, from your parents. Start a business... [Jimmy John Liautaud] borrowed $20K from his dad..."

The loan was c. 7/82 and was actually $25K.

Wisconsin voters cast *54%* of their ballots for Democratic state assembly candidates...and won 36% of the seats.

This is not what democracy looks like.
How bad is it? Of the 36 (of 99) seats the Dems won, 75% -- 27 seats! -- are so packed with Democratic-leaning voters that no Republican even bothered to run. Details here: nytimes.com/interactive/20…
By contrast, only 6 (of 63) Republican-held seats went uncontested by Democrats.
