The problem with veneer. This bldg in central Tokyo uses granite veneer (over concrete) to give the impression of a proper arch. Far better than most Tokyo architecture but look closely and you can spot the problems. It looks fake, the veneer isn't lined up to match a real arch.
Here a properly aligned stone veneer (left, still looks fake but at least it is thought through), and the real thing, superior in every way (right, using imported lime- or sandstone).
Faking building tech isn't in itself an unpardonable crime — if done right it will take on a beauty of its own (even the ancient Romans faked a lot of their architecture), but it has to be done with an understanding of what it is you are trying to achieve.
