Today is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of #Auschwitz, the most deadly camp run by the Nazis during the Holocaust. In this week's @TheEconomist, we used some remarkable datasets to depict the horrific scale of the murders committed there. (1/8) economist.com/graphic-detail…
The geographic range of people killed at Auschwitz is hard to comprehend. On the map below, we plotted the place of birth or residence of all Jewish victims identified by @yadvashem. They came from as far away as Finland and Morocco. Some were even born in South America. (2/8)
The dataset that @yadvashem has compiled is extraordinarily detailed. So far, the institution has collected the names of 4.8m Jewish Holocaust victims, from a total of 6m. You can read about each of them using the link below. (3/8) yvng.yadvashem.org
The @HolocaustMuseum also has some informative articles about the toll that each country suffered, including the millions of people that the Nazis murdered who were not Jewish. (4/8) encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art…
75 years on, @yadvashem is racing against time to identify the 1.2m unnamed Jewish victims. Today @ClaimsCon estimates that about 400,000 survivors are still alive (including all Jews who lived under an Axis regime or fled their homes). (5/8) forms.claimscon.org/worldbook18.pdf
We tried to forecast how many would still be alive in 10 years' time. It could be fewer than 100,000. (6/8)
Many of them have gathered at @AuschwitzMuseum this week to commemorate the dead—and to ensure that the living never forget the appalling crimes committed there. If you follow the museum's Twitter account, you can read the stories of several victims each day. (7/8)
I worked on this article with @_rospearce, who came up with the striking map of Auschwitz's victims, and @futuraprime, who formatted and downloaded data from @yadvashem. (8/8)
