Where the right wing has built its power on multi-year, even multi-decade strategies gaining power step-by-step from the courts to policy change, too many on the left can't even conceive of any horizon for action beyond a two-year election cycle.
I got my first deep lesson on power analysis & organizing not from Saul Alinsky but watching Newt Gingrich- not the bloated caricature we see now, but the young firebrand in the early 80s plotting a ten-year strategy for taking control of the House, which I watched him do.
In high school in early 1980s, I watched him on C-SPAN talking about strategies to defeat liberals and saw him invest in local races building a national farm team of fellow radical rightwingers- who then put him in the Speakership in 1994, ten years later as he predicted.
That Warren began battling the "law and economics" wing of the Right during this period of the 1980s is significant since she wrote specifically about their step-by-step goals to use bankruptcy laws to shift power from consumers & labor to their financial firm patrons.
In response, she allied with array of allies to fight against perverting of bankruptcy system to screw over debtors - a fight she lost due to Joe Biden among others - but built on those lessons when she built alliance for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
But clearly the lesson Warren learned, which most real organizers know, is victories are not won in a single cataclysmic battle but based on long-term strategy, building alliances and winning multiple skirmishes to strengthen your position along the way.
