Senate quiet tonight... spotlight on Rs who have considered calling for witnesses. McConnell is moving twd a vote, even as he says he doesn't have votes to block witnesses. 1) Will 4 of them commit to voting in favor of witnesses? 2) Can they come up w/ any agrmt on who to call?
what to watch: Who ends up *arguing* that they're "in favor," in spirit, of calling witnesses but *doesn't* end up voting to call witnesses, for whatever reason. Several GOP sources say many Rs want political cover, to blame Democrats and end the trial ASAP...
Last week marked the beginning of when the GOP began to explore being in favor of witnesses ONLY if it was done in a way that Dems would find unacceptable, such as a Biden for Bolton trade. This moment has been a long time coming. washingtonpost.com/politics/senat…

Breaking: Senator Feinstein tells me this morning that she will back Senator Manchin’s censure proposal, adding a second name to the list. Says she’s in touch with Manchin. No word on her final vote on both impeachment articles.
“Yes,” she said when asked if she backs censure and Manchin’s proposal.

Said she was going to write her own resolution “but he beat me to it.”

Does not think it will be privileged/ able to force a vote on the measure.

“That’s sort of the downside at this point,” she said.
Feinstein has signaled she’s likely to vote for removal from office, h/t @GarrettHaake

A few things I noticed covering Sanders for a wk in Iowa: big emphasis on health care costs & connecting with voter rage on that front, sparse talk of “revolution” compared to when he ran in 2016, and almost no talk of “Democratic socialism.” Little talk of his bio, even Trump...
Begins speeches by calling Trump a liar, then pivots to health care, as if he is chking the Trump box. His team sees Biden as the foil, which is why Sanders routinely counters the electability critique by claiming he would rally millions and others wouldn’t generate same energy.

The real problem with witnesses is this:

Republicans can get their witnesses with a simple subpoena. Democrats will have to go through the courts, and it can take months, before they can get their witnesses, if Trump asserts executive privilege. Who benefits from such a delay?
While the case makes its way through the courts, senators could be free to campaign ... unless ... Mitch has something else up his sleeve to keep the senate in session and dismiss the case if senators miss key proceedings. He is a master of hard ball, and not afraid to play it.
Mitch can do a lot of stuff to make life difficult for the Democrats, and Democrats know Mitch will not shy away from doing just that. So Democrats have some hard thinking to do by Friday. I wouldn't be surprised if they let the vote for witnesses be defeated to claim victimhood.

The number to keep our eyes on in the Senate is not the number of Rs who might acquit (a most unlikely outcome), but the number who will defy McConnell and vote for a fair trial with witnesses. 1/17
Consider the following mix: 2/17
1/ Jeff Flake said in September that at least 35 Senators would vote to impeach Trump if the vote were private. Bill Weld has said more recently that he knows there would be at least six. 3/17

Many rational Americans like me are terrified that our existing system of checks and balances is simply not strong enough to overcome the willful conspiracy of corruption, obstruction of justice, and authoritarianism of Trump and his fascist accomplices.

So what do we do?
Unfortunately, impeachment doesn't remove Trump from office, because of the obstructionist Senate.

McConnell will simply refuse to hold a vote. Impeachment doesn't stop Trump, doesn't halt his policies, and doesn't hold him accountable. It's an impotent strategy.
One might argue that impeachment would diminish Trump's chances at re-election.

But that argument is predicated on the assumption that our elections are fair.

However, our elections are NOT fair. They have been rigged by the GOP.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced today that he's filing cloture (aka the first step towards a vote) on a resolution to decrease the amount of time it takes to get to a final vote on district court nominees — from 30 hours after cloture to 2 hours
This would not change the rules for circuit court or SCOTUS nominees. Sen. Lankford has been pushing this proposal for a long time, and the resolution McConnell is putting forward is the version that Lankford and Blunt intro'd earlier this year: rules.senate.gov/news/majority-…
Although Trump has broken records with circuit court judges confirmed, there's been grumbling on the right about the slower pace on district court nominees. Rs blame Ds, saying forcing cloture and the 30-hour debate period for most nominees is unreasonable
