I knew Jagraj Singh from his time at Oxford to the time of his divorce. There are some things you might not know. A thread #YoungSikhandproud 1/n
Firstly, Jagraj Singh had a hugely positive impact through his work with Basics of Sikhi and I don't want to detract from that. But his treatment of his first wife and their son highlights a problem in Sikhi with domestic abuse and how it's handled. #YoungSikhandproud 2/n
There's never a good time to talk about something like this, especially when the person has passed away. Although many knew Jagraj Singh well, I'm not sure how many knew him in this period. #YoungSikhandproud 3/n
Although I knew Jagraj Singh for a long time, I grew increasingly upset by his treatment of his first wife and their young son. Sikhi tends to turn a blind eye to domestic abuse. #YoungSikhandproud 4/n
I'm also not convinced the explanation for Jagraj's departure from the army was accurate. I think it has more to do with what I've discussed in this thread. #YoungSikhandproud 5/n
I've been reluctant to raise this but it's frustrating to see people talk about someone they didn't really know. He was a complicated person and I think @sunny_hundal's documentary covers some of this #YoungSikhandproud #6/n
@sunny_hundal Worst part is how our community deals with this. (same way we always deal with uncomfortable truths)
➜ deny it happened
➜ call the person who said it a liar
➜ say it's pointless to raise it
This is why we end up with problems. When we can't talk about them #YoungSikhandproud
