The difference with a Soviet show trial is GOP members pathetically trying to explain why there will be no justice and how it’s not their fault instead of bluntly admitting the Leader and the Party are always right. It’s not an improvement.
The GOP wouldn't allow witnesses because all the evidence would have hurt them politically when they inevitably voted to acquit anyway. Now it will come out in public and they will say they didn't know. Cynical and reprehensible.
To serve "the ill-defined interests of the State" in Soviet-speak, the GOP has opened the floodgates to Trump's corruption and foreign interference in US elections. Willingly.
