We have a draft Commission negotiating mandate and a Johnson speech at the same time. Hard to keep up - but interesting from Johnson that the UK's approach to food being included in US trade deal remains ambiguous.
Essentially - we can have a US trade deal if we accept US food and an EU trade deal if we accept EU level playing field conditions. The two may yet clash in a couple of areas.
Important point. The predominant view globally is that the UK is part of the move towards protectionism (leaving the EU, restrictive on movement of people), and the UK overall is likely to be more closed to trade after Brexit than before.
Good luck removing US non-tariff barriers. Hard to think of any trade deal they've ever done which achieves that (due to the US regulatory system predominantly, USTR argues this cannot be bound in trade agreements)
Those suggesting Johnson mentioning science in his speech means inevitability of US food in a deal should note this is in fact a WTO requirement. It is all in the interpretation. That is what we await. wto.org/english/thewto…
I think Allie is right. Which she usually is.
Ok, more meetings to come, but summary of the day so far - we have more detail, but it all fits in broadly to what we already knew of UK and EU approaches in the future. UK is talking a grand game without detail, the EU has the detail but not necessarily the grand picture.
Can't let this go though... basically not true, and US farmers following UK animal welfare standards? Now who wants to export domestic regulations? All still to play for...
