1. I've got a broad primary overview in the Crystal Ball today, detailing the road from tonight through early June, and the marathon to the magic number of 1,991 delegates. There are eight stages as I see them. Let's take a look (thread) centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/ar…
2. The first stage is the carve-out states of IA/NH/NV/SC. Big on PR value, but not really in delegates. Not even 4% of the total pledged delegates are awarded this month. I call this stage "The Sizzle Before the Steak"
3. Super Tuesday follows, where a little over a third of all the pledged delegates will be awarded. The closest thing to a national primary we have. The initial headlines out of CA might not match the eventual results there, which won't be finalized until weeks after
3. March 10 is bracketed by two bigger Tuesdays, but there are major prizes here, too: Michigan and Washington stand out
4. March 17 might as well be Super Tuesday part 2 - four mega-states vote. By end of this night, more than 60% of all the delegates will have been awarded, and a second, breezier stage of the primary follows
5. There are scattered contests over the next few weeks, and then a three-week break from April 8-27. Wisconsin stands out here: Biden has narrowly led polls there, but if Sanders or Warren is still involved at this point, I'd expect one of them to win it given prog. electorate
6. April 28 is the Acela primary. Clinton generally did well in this group in 2016. Some home field advantages here for Biden and Bloomberg, maybe, and they might be an ideological fit for some of these eastern establishment enclaves. Last really big primary date of season
One other note on Acela primaries - we'll be up to 87% of pledged delegates awarded by the end of April
7. The May contests generally feature white electorates, and there are more than a few ancestral, conservative Dems who will be participating. Could see protest votes/victories in favor of whoever is the underdog rival to a frontrunner (like in 08 for HRC & 16 for Sanders)
8. The End comes in early June. The last important date is June 2, with New Jersey as the only big state remaining
