This is a very concerning report. Advocate found that BC gov't is not getting good value for money by contracting with for-profit corporations. This report & int'l evidence indicate better value from non-profit & public delivery, & need to reduce reliance on for-profits. #bcpoli

If a biz failed to perform work that they were contracted to provide (and kept the money), a rational response would be to take legal action & never contract with them again.

To be fair, ineffective and poor reporting requirements suggest that health authorities are not necessarily able to determine when providers fail to deliver funded care hours. This is a problem. #bcpoli
We know from the US & UK experience that increased deterrence-oriented regulatory oversight, admin burden for operators, & financial penalties can unintentionally support corporate chain consolidation. Chains have more expensive lawyers, accountants, admin capacity. #bcpoli
The long-term solution is to build out non-profit and public sector capacity where profit generation isn’t the organizational raison d’être, and where excess revenue goes back into frontline care (not owners & investors). #bcpoli
