Slide on SR 706 WB at milepost 11.7 near Goat Creek beginning at 4:47 am on February 6, 2020 until further notice. The roadway is blocked.

Here's another look. The roadway is closed until further notice due to fast moving water and debris. Water, logs and other debris covering SR 706 at milepost 10 following driving rain.

The closure continues around-the-clock until further notice. Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews have closed a 4-mile section of State Route 706 east of Ashford after heavy rainfall triggered several mudslides.   Until further notice, the highway is open to local traffic only at Elbe, milepost .01.   The highway is closed to all travelers at milepost 10.18 near Kernahan Road East. @PierceCo @MountRainierNPS Our engineering geologists are evaluating the hillside above the closure point on SR 706. They will determine whether our crews can begin clearing the highway. While we want to reopen the highway as soon as possible, safety is paramount @MountRainierNPS @PierceCo

@PierceCo @MountRainierNPS @wsdot @wsdot_traffic We need the waterflow to stop to allow our engineers to assess and crews to stabilize the hillside and then clear and repair the highway. It's up to Mother Nature when that will happen. Second slide on SR 706 further east cutting through Forest Service Road #59 with an unidentified source of water runoff.

@PierceCo @MountRainierNPS @wsdot @wsdot_traffic Our emergency contractor began work yesterday and estimates it will take one week to remove the slide debris, inspect the damage and identify repairs. Based on early estimates, we’re hopeful SR 706 can re-open with two-way traffic by mid-March. wsdotblog.blogspot.com/2020/02/sr706-… The closure at milepost 10.18, which blocks access to Mount Rainier National Park’s Nisqually entrance, will remain in place. There is no detour available.
