I watched every minute of the impeachment—the inquiry, the House debates, and the Senate trial. Before Trump, I was a Republican for 23 years. I’m not naive, and I know politics can be dirty. But here’s how I know the Democrats were on the right side in this fight. 1/
1. The Dems argued the facts of the case. Clearly. Professionally. Persuasively. The defense argued that the process was unfair and, unbelievably, that POTUS can do whatever he wants to get re-elected as long as he perceives that it’s in the public’s best interest. Omg🤦🏻‍♀️ 2/
2. Republicans voted against witnesses. The facts of the case, which don’t need to be rehashed here, already pointed to Trump’s guilt. Then this happened. They wouldn’t allow those who could clear Trump to speak under oath. Which means there was no one who could clear Trump. 3/
3. Mick Mulvaney told us all to get over it, that there will be political influence in foreign policy. And Trump supporters cheered and agreed. Mitch McConnell said he was coordinating with the White House. Lindsey Graham said he wouldn’t be impartial. Again, they cheered. 4/
After all that cheering, they then proceeded to whine about political influence in the impeachment. To which I say, sorry, you don’t get it both ways. If you didn’t like how the House ran the process, which was theirs to manage, well, to quote Mick Mulvaney, get over it. 5/
4. There were Dems on the fence re: acquittal, like Manchin, Jones & Sinema, who ultimately voted to convict. But if they hadn’t, I doubt they’d be experiencing the huge backlash Mitt Romney is, even tho their votes wouldn’t have changed the outcome any more than Romney’s did. 6/
The backlash against Romney is so telling, isn’t it? He voted his conscience. It had no effect on the outcome. Trump still won. So why are they so furious at him? So outraged? Why do they care? 7/
Maybe that’s just what you do when you’re in a cult and someone rebels against the leader. Or maybe anger has become their default setting at this point. Or maybe all the yelling helps quiet down their guilty consciences. 8/
In any case, it’s over now, and life goes back to normal—or what passes for normal these days. I’m going to take a short break from Twitter and then come back 100% focused on November. Trump is old news. We have work to do. See you all soon. ❤️ 9/9
